Why Malan?

We are a unique Afghan consultancy. Our difference is in our value-based approach to our work. Our confidence stems from our technical expertise, local ownership and presence, tailoring our services to fill the existing gap in Afghanistan.
Technical rigor
Malan’s commitment is to ensure the delivery of high-quality, technically rigorous, ethically, and culturally sound monitoring, evaluation, learning, and research services. Malan’s collective technical expertise encompasses mixed-method research, data collection and analysis, MEL frameworks, and systems for government entities, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and donor-funded programs. Our experience extends to working with various clients, involving the development of theories of change and logical models for complex multisectoral programs. We excel in the design and implementation of evaluations at multiple levels, employing both qualitative and quantitative research methodologies. Malan uses new technology throughout its entire workflow, from design to visualization.
Trained enumerators
A key advantage that Malan has is access to a range of qualified local enumerators, who give us the confidence to provide quality services. Our enumerators are from local communities across their assigned regions to assist in the smooth implementation of our assignments and adopt the socio-cultural values. Our pool consists of male and female enumerators who are educated with at least an associate or bachelor’s level university degree and possess 2-5 years of experience in humanitarian and development data collection with national and international organizations. This pool includes subject-matter expert field monitors from various backgrounds, namely health, education, agriculture, nutrition, food security, protection, ES-NFI, WASH, and cash and voucher assistance, among others. Our enumerators include couples (a male and a female partner or siblings) who can easily travel to the field. In addition to that, we allow Mahram with our female enumerators.
Ground Presence
We have extensive experience through grounded work in Afghanistan, and our co-founders are well-known and respected among the Afghan development, humanitarian, and MEL communities. We are led by dedicated Afghan professionals at all levels, from management to field teams. Our strong field presence with staff from both urban and rural areas gives us access to every part of the country with teams from within the community, including hard-to-reach areas. These ensure representation across the country. Our team has partnered and collaborated with multiple ministerial line departments and cultural, religious, and volunteer associations. We emphasize recruiting and developing local talent, fostering diversity, and investing in training programs for enhanced MEL skills. Malan’s team, equipped with technical, advocacy, and negotiation skills,
covers urban and rural areas, facilitating data collection in even the most challenging environments. With a focus on culturally sensitive MEL approaches, we ensure our services align with Afghan values, integrating local measures of success. Additionally, Malan promotes the use of local languages in training and training content, data collection, and communication to ensure accessibility for local stakeholders.
We are a local firm deeply rooted in the Afghan community and have secured ground networks with stakeholders who may play a role in succeeding in the delivery of services. Malan is different from other firms, actors, and organizations as we and our management are Afghanistan-based. This enables us to navigate the ground barriers and potential threats that may affect the delivery of services.
